NEMI AI · Defense UAS program

Engineering & manufacturing a drone powertrain.

The LMM engineered every core powertrain component, battery, motor, ESC and ground control unit, to build-to-spec standards, and stood up in-house production for all of them, delivering an indigenous supply chain for the customer's defense UAS program.

The Client

A Bengaluru-based aerospace & defense engineering firm founded in 1997, the customer is an AS9100D- and CEMILAC-certified systems-engineering company. A long-standing design partner to India's leading defense and space agencies, it brought NEMI in as its build-to-spec design partner for this UAS program.

The Brief

Localize the powertrain, production-ready.

Localize the drone's powertrain for indigenous, production-ready manufacturing.

01

Build-to-spec

Engineer battery, motor, ESC and GCU to build-to-spec, production-ready standards.

02

Stand up supply

Set up production within NEMI for the customer to source from.

03

16 → <4 mo

Compress development from a 16-month benchmark to under 4 months.

04

−20% BOM

Reduce BOM cost by 20% while matching benchmark performance.

What we did

Every core component, in-house.

NEMI engineered every core powertrain component to build-to-spec, production-ready standards, with in-house prototyping, test and production for each.

Battery

Battery pack & BMS

Anvil Mechanical & Electronic CAD generate the battery and BMS designs; in-house assembly to rapidly prototype and test.

Motor

Electromagnetics & mechanical

Anvil's motor-design library with skill files for customization and simulation; in-house machining and motor manufacturing.

ESC

Electronic speed controller

MIL-grade (MIL-STD-810 / 461) controller with FOC firmware, throttle mapping and RPM matching, designed in Electronic CAD.

GCU

Ground control unit

Integrated power-delivery and retraction mechanism designed in Anvil; LMM-orchestrated prototyping and test.

NEMI is really exceptional in the breadth and depth of design and manufacturing capabilities they've established. I don't think there is a single company in India where all the components for a drone can be manufactured completely in-house, usually we source batteries, motors, electronic and mechanical components from multiple vendors. NEMI can do it all in-house! And their turnaround time in component engineering, tooling and production setup is just incredible, I've never seen anything like it.
